The early (1917) Le Retour is one of Milhaud's first examples of the use of polytonality, the orchestra consisting of 13 solo instruments and two string quartets, with every player getting an independent melodic or tonal line. The string septet (1964) contains an aleatory second movement while the better-known Aspen Serenade was a 1957 return to Milhaud's early polytonal days. Mid-price.
